The era when seniority meant knowing more is no longer a safe assumption. A growing number of Korean public offices and private companies are testing that assumption directly, through reverse mentoring: formally assigning new hires to mentor senior executives and department heads. Geumcheon-gu, Seocho-gu, Jeonju, and KOTRA have turned to the format to work through specific friction points, from resistance to digital tools to unfamiliarity with AI, while companies such as LG Uplus and POSCO International use it toward a wider goal: narrowing the distance between generations inside the organization. Solid outcome data remains scarce, and the practice has yet to reach the small and medium-sized firms where most of Korea’s workforce is employed, but on the ground, these programs are showing that learning, and respect, do not have to flow only one way, from senior to junior.
