< Summary  >

The paper examines changes to the policy context since the last in-depth review of ageing-related statistics in 2012, summarizes international activities in the area, assesses the implementation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Recommendations on Ageing-related Statistics (2016) in selected member States, identifies persisting and new gaps and challenges, and makes recommendations for further work in this area.
At its February 2025 meeting, the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) Bureau discussed the issues, challenges and recommendations identified in this paper and supported the recommendation to establish a task force on indicators for monitoring the UNECE Regional Implementation Strategy for the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.
The current document is a shortened version of the review. The full text also includes a section describing internationally coordinated surveys in the UNECE region, description of individual country experiences with the implementation of he UNECE Recommendations, the questionnaire on ageing-related statistics completed by the participating countries, and a table on indicator production. The full version of the document was sent to all CES members for electronic consultation in April 2025 and is available at the CES web page. Summary of the feedback from the consultation will be provided in document ECE/CES/2025/13/Add.1.
The Conference is invited to endorse the outcomes of the in-depth review, discuss its findings and recommendations, and provide further input to the work of the new task force.
