< Summary >
The present report, prepared in accordance with resolution 1996/2 of the Economic and Social Council, provides an overview of demographic trends for the world and for groups of countries and areas categorized by the timing of their observed or projected peak population size. Understanding past, present and future population trends for countries, regions and the world is critical for achieving a more inclusive, prosperous and sustainable future, as recognized in the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and recently acknowledged also in the Declaration on Future Generations. The report focuses on recent demographic changes, as well as projected trends over a 30-year time-horizon and beyond, and stresses that countries need to prepare for future populations that may differ appreciably, in terms of both size and their distribution by age, from those of the recent past.
