On 10 February 2026, an international online rally titled “Who Decides: The Human Rights Principles That Matter to Older Persons with Dementia” will be held, organised by Age Knowble.

Dementia is a rapidly growing global challenge, affecting more than 55 million people worldwide and projected to exceed 139 million by 2050. It is not only a health issue, but also a matter of rights and equity, closely linked to disability, gender, care, and broader social determinants.

While global recognition is increasing — including references to dementia in UN political declarations — older persons living with dementia remain underrepresented in human rights discussions. The forthcoming UN Convention on the rights of older persons presents a timely opportunity to make dementia-related human rights principles visible.

This rally is part of the Age With Rights Rally 2026 and creates space to identify the human rights principles that matter most to older persons with dementia, grounded in lived experience and informed by civil society, human rights, and policy perspectives.

Rally Structure & Key Themes

• Hearing lived experience
A session centred on older persons living with dementia, sharing their everyday realities, challenges, aspirations, and what matters most in their lives.

• From lived experience to systems
Discussion with organisations and policy, human rights and health perspectives on the key human rights principles that should be reflected in the forthcoming UN Convention on the rights of older persons.

• Interactive dialogue with participants
Participants are invited to share the human rights principles they consider most important, followed by facilitated discussion, Q&A, and open mic reflections.
