Population change is emerging as one of the defining megatrends of the twenty-first century. Across Asia and the Pacific, longer life expectancy, declining fertility rates, and evolving family structures are transforming the demographic landscape at an unprecedented pace, reshaping the way societies live, work, and care across generations.

To contribute to a deeper understanding of these shifts, the ASEM Global Ageing Center (AGAC) has released the Korean translation of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) 2026 Theme Study, Advancing a Society for All Ages in Asia and the Pacific.

The study examines the demographic forces driving change across the region and explores their implications for labour markets, social protection systems, healthcare, and the future of work. It also highlights the transformative potential of healthy and active ageing, recognizing the substantial contributions of older persons through paid employment, entrepreneurship, unpaid care, and the strengthening of social capital.

Rather than viewing population ageing solely as a policy challenge, the report presents it as a testament to human progress. It calls for forward-looking, evidence-based policies, sustained investment, and enhanced regional cooperation to ensure that demographic change becomes a catalyst for greater inclusion, stronger intergenerational solidarity, and the realization of a society for all ages.
